The river Teign
A river in the southwest of the UK
As with several other South Devonshire rivers, the Teign rises on Dartmoor. Two streams meet at Chagford and flows on tobe near to Chudleigh and Kingsteignton ~ where the river Bovey joins. The river Lemon joins at Newton Abbot ~ from where the river flows into the English Channel after filling a large tidal lagoon at Teignmouth.
Teign is pronounced to rhyme with 'tane' (as in 'tame'). However the town at the mouth of the river ~ Teignmouth ~ takes the pronunciation more like 'Tinmouth'. In practice the 'g' is not quite silent. A subtle movement of the back of the tongue can be added to match the local dialect.
There are numerous photographs ~ on the WWW ~ taken along the 30-mile stretch of this pretty river. I shall add mine, as and when the opportunity to take them arises.
If ~ whilst browsing the Web ~ you happen across this page and wonder as to its relevance: it is here by way of explanation for our use of the word 'Teign' as a descriptive label for one of our educational products. As educators we took the opportunity to post ~ or boast ~ a few notes about one of the UK's minor rivers.
